Driving Laws in India

Driving laws in India are constantly evolving to ensure road safety and reduce the number of accidents. Responsible drivers must stay informed about these laws and comply to avoid any legal repercussions. Continue reading to know more about driving regulations in India.

  • Valid Driving License:

To drive a motor vehicle in India, you must hold a valid driving license. You should renew the license periodically as per the guidelines issued by the government. Driving without a valid permit can lead to legal penalties.

    Seatbelt Laws:

Wearing your car seat belt is not just a matter of protecting yourself from serious injury or death in the event of an accident, it’s also the law. As per the latest notification from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, all cars manufactured on or after April 1, 2021, must have a safety belt for the passengers in the back seat. This rule applies to Indian and international car manufacturers. And non-compliance can result in a fine of up to Rs. 1,000.

Introducing back seat belts is a welcome move that safety advocates and organizations like CEAT have applauded. Wearing a safety belt in the back seat can reduce the risk of injury and death in an accident by up to 75%, as per a report by the World Health Organization (WHO)*. It also helps to prevent passengers from colliding with the front seat or dashboard.

CEAT emphasizes the importance of following traffic rules and regulations to ensure the safety of all road users. As part of our commitment to road safety, we have created a video highlighting the significance of wearing a seatbelt in the back seat. You can watch the video here.

    Speed Limits:

Every road in India has a designated speed limit that drivers should adhere to. Speed limits vary depending on the type of road, location, and traffic conditions. Exceeding the speed limit can lead to legal penalties and increase the risk of accidents.

    Drunk Driving:

Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is strictly prohibited in India. Violating this law can lead to heavy fines, imprisonment, suspension of your driving license, and even cancellation of your vehicle registration.

    Using Mobile Phones while Driving:

Using mobile phones while driving is strictly prohibited in India. Hand-free devices are allowed, but the driver should not hold the phone with his or her hand. Violating this law can result in legal penalties, including fines and license suspension.

    Child Safety:

To ensure the safety of children, the Indian government mandates that those below the age of 14 wear appropriate seatbelts and sit in the back seat of a car. Not following this law can lead to legal penalties and pose a significant risk to the child's safety.

Driving laws in India are in place to ensure the safety of all road users. Responsible drivers must comply with these laws and promote road safety. Remember, every little effort counts when it comes to road safety. Let us work together to make our roads safer for everyone. Stay safe and drive responsibly!
